Stitch Still Rules

There’s something timeless about Lilo & Stitch. First released in 2002, the film introduced us to Stitch, the chaos-loving alien with a soft spot for found family. With his blue fur, four arms, and unpredictable energy, Stitch quickly became one of Disney’s most beloved characters—and two decades later, he’s everywhere again.

A big part of what makes the original movie stand out is the art style, thanks to director and character designer Chris Sanders. His designs are loose, curvy, and full of life, with characters that feel like they were sketched from the heart rather than manufactured. That style had a big influence on me as a young artist. It showed that personality and warmth could come through in every line—something I still try to bring into my own work today.

I haven’t seen the new live-action Lilo & Stitch remake (yet), but from what I’ve heard, it’s a fun, heartfelt update. People seem to love how it captures the wild spirit of the original while introducing Stitch to a new generation of fans.

And speaking of new fans—Stitch is everywhere at retail right now. From plush dolls to school supplies to home goods, it’s clear this little blue troublemaker has cemented his place in pop culture. You can’t walk down a toy aisle or open a Disney app without seeing those big ears and toothy grin.

Stitch and Angel finger puppet samples arrived in the office this week

At Ginsey Home Solutions, I had the chance to work on a set of official Disney Finger Puppets featuring Stitch. It was an incredibly fun project that involved using the Disney Style Guide—basically a treasure trove of poses, expressions, and branding elements that help keep everything on-model and authentic. Translating that style into something three-dimensional (and bath-friendly!) was a great creative challenge and a dream gig for a long-time Stitch fan.

Whether it’s nostalgia or just great character design, Stitch continues to connect. And even though I haven’t caught the remake yet, I love seeing how this misfit alien is finding new fans and fresh ways to make people smile—one plush, puppet, or movie at a time.
